How to Pray the Scriptures – 3 Ways

We can’t go wrong by praying the scriptures. The scriptures are the Word and the will of God.  We should always try to pray as close to the will of God as possible.  Most of the time, as far as I have observed, most of us pray just according to what we think we need and according to our own desires—without much reference to the Bible.  Sometimes we even make a list of all the things we want, and pray for them, hoping that God will answer at least a few of them.  In some respects, to make a list of everything we need and desire and are anxious about is good.  We should commit everything to God, trusting Him for everything as a child (Phil. 4:6).  But if that is the only way we pray, we are not progressing in prayer.  A better way to pray is according to the scriptures.  I want to suggest three different ways to do this.

1. Abide in the Word. The very best way to pray according to the scriptures is to first abide in the Word (to spend much time meditating on it), and then to let your knowledge of God’s Word flow into your prayers. The most mature Christians pray this way. Their prayers are full of scripture quotations and scripture principles. This is the character of Paul’s prayers.  I’m sure he spent much time reading and meditating on scripture, and so, when he prayed, God’s Word just oozed out of his prayers.  This way of course will take some time to develop, perhaps years, but I think we should all strive to pray this way.

2. Read the word as a prayer. The easiest way to pray scripture is to just read a passage prayerfully, or to read it as a prayer. This is quite often done with The Lord’s Prayer, or with the twenty third Psalm, or with some of the prayers of Paul. The idea is to make those Biblical prayers our prayers.

3. Pray around a passage. The idea here is to read and meditate on a passage, and then to pray according to its meaning or application. And if you don’t quite understand the passage you would also pray asking God to show you the meaning.  This is the way I usually pray the scriptures when I have my quiet times in the morning.  This morning I read from 2 Timothy 3:1-7.  Here Paul talks about how in the last days “perilous times will come.”  And he exhorted Timothy to be strong, and live godly, and to continue in the things he has learned and been assured of.

My prayer went something like this:

Lord, I can see that perilous times are already here. People all around me are so selfish and proud and greedy; and some have a form of godliness but it isn’t real.  Lord, help me to live a pure life and to endure the suffering of persecution that you have told me I will face.  Help me to continue in the things I have learned, and to continue studying and meditating on Your Word so that I will be equipped for every good work.

Then also in my prayer I prayed for the country (the USA), as we have just elected a new president.  I also prayed for myself, that God would strengthen me for the work I have to do today, that I would do it to please Him.

I want to urge you to start (or continue) praying the scriptures. If you find it hard, start by just reading a passage prayerfully.  Next, think about the passage and just talk to God about what you think it means.

I want to also urge you to memorize some key verses and passages. Then you can pray like Paul.  You can pray the scriptures even when you don’t have a Bible near you; for if you have the Word memorized and in your heart, the Holy Spirit will bring that memorized Word to your mind as you are praying; and He will cause it to flow out of your mouth as Spirit-filled prayer.

Praise in the Holy Spirit: Our Best Aid to Prayer

The best aid to prayer is the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:26). But He does not work alone.  He will use our praise as His aid to help us pray—to energize our prayers.  Here is how I believe it works: the Holy Spirit first calls to us and shares God’s truth with us.  When we choose to sing and praise Him, as we rejoice over His truth, we are in a sense calling back to Him and telling Him that we love Him and adore Him.  We are inviting Him to come to us and love us and fill us up.  And so He does.  By praise then we are bringing the Holy Spirit into our prayers; and He energizes our prayers and makes the presence of God real to us.

Praise in the Holy Spirit we could say is the energy and the joy of prayer. It is also the hope and the promise of prayer.  By praise (in the Holy Spirit) prayer possesses the energy and the desire to be persistent and enduring to the end.  We see this exemplified for us by Jesus in Hebrews 12:2, which says, “…who for the joy set before Him endured the cross…”  Here we see that Jesus endured the pain of the cross through His prayers because of what was on the other side, which He set His mind to praise God for.  Hence, when He chose to rejoice and praise God for all that was awaiting Him in heaven, this I think empowered Him to endure the cross through much agonizing prayer.  The same is true for us; when we choose to praise God, especially when times are tough, this will help us to be strong in prayer.  It, in fact, is God’s designed way for us to pray through the difficult times.

Praise in the Holy Spirit is a great weapon of warfare against our enemy Satan, and against the world and the flesh. When we rejoice and praise God we are resisting the devil, for the devil hates the believer’s praises and runs away (Ja. 4:7-8).

Moreover, when we sing and praise God, using scripture songs, all our evil thoughts and arguments vanish away (2 Cor. 10:4-5). Praise is both our way of escape from sin’s temptations (1 Cor. 10:13) and is our best preparation for serious prayer.

President Trump Has Constitutional Authority to Issue the Travel Ban – Section 1182 (f)

Pray that our leaders in government would have persistence and confidence that this Ban would eventually go through. Pray that the Supreme Court judges would see the authority that the president has, and that they would also see the vital need for this ban.

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer for Trump and Country

Our President has the authority to issue the Travel Ban. Section 1182 (f) of the Constitution says,

Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.

Unfortunately, certain federal judges have not heeded the law and have caved in to those who have cried “religious discrimination” when there is no proof of it. None. The President is only trying to protect our country and our people from terrorist.

We Must Trust Our Leaders to Bring Us a Great Health Care Plan

Pray for all those who are crafting the plan, that God would give them wisdom and insight into what will work best. And for patience and understanding as people work through the different ideas. Let the best ideas be seen.

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer for Trump and Country

I’m so tired of all the complaining and bickering over our new health care plan.

Where is the trust?

If we can’t trust the good people we have, who can we trust?

We need to let our good and talented people do their jobs and make the plan work—and trust them.

I think Thomas Price and Paul Ryan and others have done a great job so far at crafting this new plan and they will make it work.

The President and Vice President and the Speaker are very excited about it. So let’s do it!

If others have good ideas then they should present them, but in the end we need to trust the people we have that are putting the plan together and get out of the way! No more complaining!

Let’s show our trust and unity. Yes, let’s cheer them on and believe in them, and believe…

How Witnessing Aids Our Prayers

Witnessing is a great aid to prayer. When we are faithful to witness to the lost God gives us power in prayer.  In John 14:21 Jesus said, “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”  I think a big part of His commandments spoken of here is to be His witnesses (Lu. 24:47-48; Acts 1:8).  And so, when we are obedient to witness, He shows His love to us and manifests Himself to us, which of course gives us a good groundwork for prayer; for prayer is all about having a love relationship with God.

Also, in John 15:7 Jesus said, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” What does abide in Him mean?  Basically it means to remain in Him.  It means to be attached to Him and to draw life from Him.  It also suggests that we love Him; and out of our love for Him we obey Him in everything, including witnessing.   If we are faithful to abide in Him in this way, so that we are witnessing, then we have the promise of prayer.  Yes, our witness is a great aid to prayer.  In fact, without it our prayers would be quite powerless.

What Trump Supporters are Saying about Leaks and Wiretapping

I pray that our investigators would find the obvious leaks, leakers and wire tappers, and that they would receive a quick and just judgment for their crimes. No crime should be left unpunished. I pray that the finding and punishment of these criminal would set a good example of justice in our country and for the world to see.

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer for Trump and Country

001

On February 4, 2017, Pete Hegseth of Fox News interviewed a group of Trump supporters who were demonstrating for President Trump outside of Trump Tower. The two topic of discussion were the recent leaks, and the Trump Tower wiretapping allegations by President Trump. Here are some of the questions and answers.

Q. What do you think of all the leaks?

A. “It is an effort to try to undermine our President.”

A. “They [the Democrats] are all hypocrites. They are all what they say the enemy is.”

Q. What do you think of the wiretap allegations at Trump Tower?

A. “I’m not happy about it.”

A. “Definitely not okay.”

A. “It’s insane.”

Conclusions Given By the Fox News Panel

  • “These people are smarter than most of our media.”
  • “People want our President to succeed.”

I’ve never seen a state of the union address in my lifetime where the President cast a more optimistic tone for the future.

Former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich

The best speech of his career. I was blown away.

He was in command.

He had a brilliant opening.

American syndicated columnist, Charles Krauthammer

This is without a doubt the best speech he’s ever given. In fact, this should have been his Inaugural address.

Russia Talk Is Fake News

Pray for the News institutions to be truthful.

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer for Trump and Country

008

President Trump tweeted Feb. 26, 2017,

Russia talk is FAKE NEWS put out by the Dems, and played up by the media, in order to mask the big election defeat and the illegal leaks!

I agree. The Dems just won’t admit that they lost the election and they are doing everything they can to harm this Presidency and make it look bad—even if it is done through lies and misdirection. And what they are doing is not helping this country.

The big news today is whether we need a special prosecutor to investigate Trump and the Russia link (Fake News! There is no Russia link.). This is so outrageous and obviously a Dem. tactic to try to de-legitimatize our President.

We all need to admit that the election was won fairly without the help of Russia. And our news focus now needs to be on what is being done to…

Why I Started This Blog (my About)

I haven’t thought about political things at all until recently (during this last 2016-2017 election). For some reason I have gotten caught up in Donald Trump’s run for the white House. At first I was totally against him. I was more for Rubio, Bush, or Cruz.  But when Trump handedly defeated everyone, I felt I had no choice but to get behind him.  He was much better than Hillary. And now that he is President, I am totally behind him.  Oh, I know he is kind of rough around the edges; but I think he is a real go-getter—getting things done! He is making decisions and plowing ahead like no other president in history.  And I’m beginning to think that that is exactly what America needs at this time—because we have gotten so far behind. We are so much in debt; our military is depleted; and this Obama Care thing is terrible! I also think this country is on a fast track to moral corruption.

flags-copyOne of the main reasons I have started this blog is to promote more prayer for President Trump, his administration, and the country. So much prayer is needed right now, not only because of Trump’s lack of experience, but because there are so many forces against him. The President and his people are doing the right things (as far as I can see), but they are being opposed at every turn, just because people don’t like him and because he is conservative.  So far, President Trump has shown extraordinary resilience and courage; but all of us have our breaking points.

Pray for the President and his cabinet. Pray for continued strength, wisdom and endurance.

Pray especially for all American Christians (and all Christians who are reading this blog), that we would humble ourselves and pray and seek His face (2 Chron. 7:14).

How Our Service to Others Aids Our Prayers – 3 Ways

009

There are a number of ways that our obedient service to others aids our prayers. Here are three ways:

1. Our service to others makes our prayers more powerful.

Most basic, our service to others helps us to keep our faith alive and therefore makes prayer more powerful. Let me explain: Hebrews 11:6 tells us that he who comes to God (in prayer) must believe Him (must believe that “He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him”). So then, in order to pray effectively we must have faith in God. But what is faith? Faith is not just an intellectual belief in God. Faith is not just an idea, a noun. Faith is also a verb, an action—to believe and to put to action our beliefs. Having faith in God requires that we obey Him. Hence, if we trust and believe God we will do what He tells us to do. Therefore, when we obediently serve others (as God desires us to do) we are acting out our faith; and we are also making our faith stronger and more perfect. James teaches us in James 2:18-26 that faith without works is dead, but by works faith is perfected. Therefore, when faith becomes stronger (more perfect) through our service, so does our prayers.

2. Our service to others strengthens prayer compassion.

Just as our faith is strengthened by our service, so is our prayer compassion strengthened. Every time we observe those in need and do something to help them (even if it is just praying for them) our compassion for them is watered. When God puts needy people before our eyes, and we see them and obediently serve them, He gives us more of His Spirit so that we love them more and have more of Christ’s heart to pray for them.

3. Our service to others may become the answer to our prayers.

When we serve others, our service actually becomes part of prayer—the answer to prayer. That is, when prayer is made for someone and we step out obediently to help them, we may become the answer to the prayer! Our obedient service to others definitely aids prayer. It keeps our prayers on the cutting edge of His kingdom work.
